It wasn't the fact that it was a Python KeyError, which could have indeed meant many things. But it was that combined with the context (kf=''). Ed and I, knowing the code pretty intimately, immediately recognized the kf meaning KeyField, and saw that it was empty, which would have resulted in the behavior you described.
