A reflection on today's Scripture:
Do not be afraid . . .
It takes my breath away whenever I think that the all-powerful God who
created and holds this immeasurable universe in being has a personal,
loving interest in me along with each human who has ever been or will
be.
In my twilight years, having more time for meditation and introspection
and less preoccupation with doing and getting, I can see how God, by His
grace, has used the many wrongs I've committed in my life, the
sufferings I've created for myself and my family, to bless me.
He made of me, as a poet said, "a devil sick of sin," crying out for
release from the hell of self and the world's values, seeking refuge in
the freedom of being wholly God's in Christ. He showed me there is no
escape from life's fears, uncertainties, failures and consequences, but
always His forgiveness and unconditional love.
His healing love wounded me, for I mistakenly thought I must earn it,
deserve it. Then I saw God's saving plan, its simplicity and its
difficulty, being all a matter of grace to which I must learn to say,
"yes." My death with Christ, denial of self in loving, trusting
obedience to Him was my only road to freedom.
Merciful Lord,
enable us to abandon ourselves to Your love in Christ;
release us from sin's prison. Amen.
