A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today's readings bid us to love God with our entire beings and our
neighbors as ourselves. Yet it seems from our treatment of God and one
another that many haven't a clue about the nature of genuine love.

God has good reason for placing Himself first in the order of loving;
for God, through Jesus Christ, shows He is the author and only source
of true love which is a total self-giving. Apart from a deep and
abiding relationship with God, we are capable only of a love that
seeks to please "self" more than those we say we love.

How do we tap into God's love, that boundless sea surrounding us,
yearning to fill us? First we must see our need, cease being satisfied
with worldly treasures, become concerned with those of God's kingdom.
If we are open to God, His mercy reveals to us that this life's
"goods" cannot satisfy us nor follow us to the grave, that what He has
prepared for us is unimaginably better than worldly acquisitions.

Seeing this, we call upon Christ's name, ask to be united to Him in
mind and heart through His Holy Spirit. The work is all God's; we have
only to deny ourselves, be emptied of our selfishness and continually
say, "yes" to how God is working in us, however painful that may be.
This ability to love grows progressively if we realize and genuinely
accept that our Father does know best and wants the best for each of
us.

          Blessed Lord,
show us that unless we live in Your genuine love,
               all our works remain empty,
will fail to give Your life to others. Amen
