A reflection on today's Scripture:

By some present standards, the two women in today's readings might be
considered slightly daft; for what person in possession of her
faculties would give away what she needs for her and her family's
sustenance?

It is all a matter of orientation. Those who have plenty are disposed
to think that what they have has been won entirely through their own
labors, so they hang onto it tenaciously, fearful of having less, of
being shamefully forced into a lower standard of living.

The poor and helpless, however, realize that the little they have to
keep body and soul together is pure gift, a grace from God, as in the
case of these two widows. Their response to God is positive, knowing
it is He who has moved others to charity on their behalf and that
they must respond in a like manner to God's generosity, give back to
Him a good portion of what He has given them.

Poverty has not been created by God but by man in his greed to amass
to himself many worldly goods and the attitude that in this world
every man must be for himself. They don't realize that this very
night they may be called upon to give an account of themselves apart
from their material possessions.

In the final analysis, one may be either filled with love of and
trust in God -- or love of and trust in self. Only the former is the
way to "life."

     Generous Father,
imbue us with Your self-giving love,
that we may make You known to this self-seeking world.
          Amen.
