The Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Solemnity of the Lord Jesus Christ the King
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
In an era termed "democratic" when earthly kings are seen either as
hateful tyrants or obsolete figureheads, we may wonder why the Church
insists on applying such an outdated title to our Lord. Perhaps we
need a periodic reminder that contrary to the free-wheeling,
ever-changing, soft-on-sin Christianity being touted by some today,
One still remains who is worthy of being called King, absolute ruler
of the universe: Jesus, the Christ.
Christ is the Word of God who, at His command, brought forth out of
nothingness not only legions of angels but also the immeasurable
heavens and all material things. Seeing that it was "all good," our
Self-giving God created man in His own image, made us living souls by
breathing His very Spirit into us. But our choice to become our own
god --sin-- grieved and quenched the fire of God's Spirit within us;
and having evicted God, we lost our ability to perceive truth clearly
and to love God and one another genuinely.
Yet, we are never without hope; for driven by His love, He pursues
each soul ceaselessly, desiring to press them to His heart. Christ
was sent in human flesh to reveal to us the One true God and to draw
us back into His kingdom, bring us into oneness with Him, restore us
whole and blameless to our heavenly Father. Our part is to accept
Christ's sovereignty over us and, by grace, live each day in His
loving truth.
Savior of the world,
empty us of pride, show us our need,
that we may seek to be filled
with Your divine life. Amen.
