A reflection on today's Scripture:
In today's First Reading, St. Paul explains what our role and
responsibility must be in relation to the contemporary society in
which we live. He says that we must shine like stars in the midst of
a "depraved and perverse generation."
There is little question that we are confronted with rampant
widespread disregard for God's moral law and His legitimate
authority. Instead, in our misguided "enlightenment" we have come to
believe that the right to determine what is morally correct is an
individual matter, something we can all decide about, according to
our own set of values and preferences.
How wise and loving our Creator was when he gave us the Ten
Commandments and His beloved Church. He certainly knew how clever the
devil would be in tempting us to follow our own thoughts and
feelings. How good God was to let us know in an unequivocal way what
was good and what was evil, what is right and what is wrong. He knew
what would happen if elementary laws of goodness and decency were
arbitrary and subject to interpretation. We know well what happens -
every thing becomes relative and moral absolutes are disregarded.
Let us then praise God for the clear direction He has given us. Let
us in our own particular and individual way make certain that we
shine like the stars of heaven by our faithful observance of all that
our gracious Lord has taught. Then, with His grace, may we become
good examples - shining stars to light the way for our fellow
travelers, in the midst of this "depraved and perverse generation."
