A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The Opening Prayer for today's Mass urges us not to let our
weaknesses discourage us, but that we might persevere in love. They
are important words for us to consider and take to heart because
discouragement, though a normal human response, can be manipulated by
the devil to the point that we become dispirited and flee from the
very One who can remedy it.

Recognizing our shortcomings is absolutely necessary if we are to
persevere in love. Love however demands not only that we recognize
ourselves as we are, but also that we recognize God as He is. Without
this double-pronged awareness there cannot be true humility which is
always a prerequisite for genuine love of God.

Let us then seek the Light of the Holy Spirit by cultivating a
relationship with the Lord. Let us develop patterns and habits of
prayer that will help us to recognize the loving, forgiving, presence
of the Lord and His unfathomable desire to be our Friend, our Helper,
our Love.

Then when things get rough, as so often they do, we won't fall down
under the weight of our troubles and weakness, but know with
knowledge that goes beyond our human understanding, that the words of
Jesus in today's gospel are not just lovely and comforting, but true.

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me,
               for I am meek an humble of heart;
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

                                      Matthew 11:28-30 (Douay-Rheims)
