+1. For the record, I do all my work with a stable Darcs release (currently 2.2.0). The only testing *I* do of unreleased code is the functional tests in tests/. The code proposed only affects whatsnew (read-only), which I take to mean "low risk". It dramatically speeds up whatsnew (a minor win), and will also exercise some of Petr's new code in the wild (a major win).
