I just checked the differences of the XMP files:

(1) When I close darktable at LP this XMP file is written:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="XMP Core 4.4.0-Exiv2">
 <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#";>

    xmlns:xmpMM="http://ns.adobe.com/xap/1.0/mm/";
    xmlns:darktable="http://darktable.sf.net/";
   xmp:Rating="5"
   xmpMM:DerivedFrom="DSC1630.JPG"
   darktable:xmp_version="2"
   darktable:raw_params="0"
   darktable:auto_presets_applied="1"
   darktable:history_end="1">

    </rdf:Seq>
   </darktable:history>
  </rdf:Description>
 </rdf:RDF>
</x:xmpmeta>

(2) By choosing the 'reload XMP' in the dialoge I get only two differences:

   darktable:xmp_version="2"  >     darktable:xmp_version="1"

   new lines between    </darktable:history>

       <darktable:history_modversion>

     <rdf:li>2</rdf:li>

    <rdf:Seq>
     <rdf:li>00000000000000000000004000000000</rdf:li>

   <darktable:blendop_version>
    <rdf:Seq>
     <rdf:li>7</rdf:li>
    </rdf:Seq>
   </darktable:blendop_version>
   <darktable:multi_priority>
    <rdf:Seq>
     <rdf:li>0</rdf:li>
    </rdf:Seq>
   </darktable:multi_priority>
   <darktable:multi_name>
    <rdf:Seq>
     <rdf:li> </rdf:li>
    </rdf:Seq>
   </darktable:multi_name>

  and    </rdf:Description>

(3) By choosing the 'overwrite XMP' in the dialoge I get only three
differences:

the first two are the same like in (2)

the third is:
darktable:params="9891cc3f8f1e9e410000004000000000"  >
darktable:params="00000000000000000000004000000000"

Please note that in all versions the monochrome mode is enabled (this
was my criteria to observe the changes). However I do not understand,
when the database and when the XMP files will be used.

I hope this information help you to reduce/identify the problem.
