if you have a filemanager that can see your card, copy the files to a
local drive and set Shotwell to address that drive instead of your card. 
w/o shotwell being able to see your card (and dt) which I cannot
understand, that will be the closest to your present workflow, unless you
want to write a script to do what shotwell does.

if you do not have a filemanager that can see your card, you will have to
determine why and address that problem.  

I would bet the problem with shotwell is your version of libgphoto2, I
have libgphoto2-6-2.5.17
