As mentioned above, I've always been able to, with my Olympus cameras, going 
back to at least the turn of the century. :)

I understand that this hasn't been the the case for other brands in the past. I 
was hoping others on the list, who have long term experience with those, might 
have perspective on how much this has or hasn't changed over the years. If not, 
please ignore.
