I can't solve your cropping issues, sorry. This could mitigate your pain: I enable crop and rotate using a shortcut, when the grid doesn't appear what I do is to move the rotation value with the mouse scroll a little bit and reset back (double click in the line to reset).
If you look for a darktable forum you have pixls.us <https://discuss.pixls.us/> in its darktable category <https://discuss.pixls.us/c/software/darktable/19>. I think that you can find an updated version built by a user.
