Until DT supports CR3 - new Canon is completely out of the picture for me either. You can probably call them or email them or if you are into twitter or something else like that feel free to make your voice heard.

Thanks for the reply. I hope Darktable and other FOOS developers can work around this limitation imposed upon us by Canon. I also will now not upgrade my Canon camera. Seems like they don't want my business. If I buy a camera, I feel I have the right to develop images in any program I wish, but Canon has a different view. Of course, using Adobe's DNG converter would be a simple solution to handling the CR3 files for any current users of Canon and Darktable. I wonder if we lose anything when we convert to DNG from CR3?

Short answer: not yet, but support is being worked on.
Long answer: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/canon-cr3-raw-support-your-move/14192 (and other discussions on the same forum). The biggest problem now is the metadata support (Exiv2)

Does Darktable handle Canon's CR3 files? I have just been given a
CR3 file from a CanonD90 and it will not open.
