I'm a Darktable newbie, and have not looked at the code, but here's
what I've found. Darktable writes a "sidecar" file, with an .xmp
suffix, with the metadata about the image it has. The same data is
stored in a database as well, but ignore that for now. Lightroom,
for example, also uses .xmp files. However, I don't know if there
is a standard for the fields in .xmp files, and Darktable uses
a bunch of fields that are specific to it, and which Lightroom almost
certainly won't recognize. I assume Lightroom does something similar.
However, some fields look like they follow the Dublin Core system.
Here's a snippet:
<dc:subject>
<rdf:Seq>
<rdf:li>Stalybridge</rdf:li>
<rdf:li>England</rdf:li>
<rdf:li>UK</rdf:li>
<rdf:li>location</rdf:li>
</rdf:Seq>
</dc:subject>
This looks like it's possible Lightroom could understand it.
The .xmp files are XML, so it would be possible to write a tool
to convert the fields to a form that Lightroom understands, for
those fields where a sufficiently compatible mapping can be found.
It might be, of course, that Darktable already uses compatible
fields when possible and that the current fields that are specific
to Darktable have no corresponding fields in Lightroom. I haven't
investigated that.
