You will understand better if you run darktable as darktable -d cache
from the command line. It will tell you how many free slots you have
in the cache. and where is the limit. You can change the amount of
free slots by doing two things: the most important one is enabling
thumbnail compression in the preferences, the second one is increasing
the amount of cache in memory in the core options tab. Take into
account that the amount of cache will be also mapped to the RAM, so
you will have that missing.
