I was going through the NEF files in a certain folder and processing
them all. The folder contained NEF files and also JPEGs for the same
images. I exported the processed files to the same folder as tiff
files. But darktable died when I was exporting the last image. Now I
can't get anything usable from that directory.

First of all, when I bring darktable up again it is in an old foder I
finished with long ago. Moreover, the folder shows .xmp files for all
the tiff files and jpegs as well as for the NEFs. Moreover, it won't
let me do anything. I've tried doing various things, including removing
all those extra files and moving the tiffs I want to keep to a
subdirectory.

But the only thing that works is creating a new directory and mvoing
only the NEFs and the NEF.xmp into it. Then I can work with the images
again.

So, would someone please explain to me where darktable is keeping
information about the directory. Why does it keep thinking files are
there even if they have been removied. And where can I find a reliable
description of how to deal with folders so I can predict what will be in
them, and how can I prevent darktable from relaying on very odl file
histories?

Finally, can anyone explain just what is gained by having such a messed
up fille nadling structure?
