I think Jo's advice on file management is spot on , and in fact not only do I
keep raws and exports in different directories but I keep them in separate file
systems with my originals/raws in a dedicated storage location. Not keeping
them separate would cause too much trouble in working out whether .jpeg
there is an original out of camera file needing processing or an already
processed jpeg that doesn't.

Truth to tell I'm not entirely happy with even the .xmp files being kept in the
same directory and would like to have my raw's file system essentially read
only to minimise any possibility of disk/file corruption ever touching my
images. That said I can appreciate the convenience of having raws and xmps
co-located for ease of database rebuild.

Jo;

Is there a technical reason for offering this advice ... it would seem to me
that keeping jpg and tif files in the same directory as the raw would make for
easier overall file management.
