Welcome to darktable (and Pentax :) ).

As I think has been said it's probably a bad idea to expose to the left as it
guarantees suboptimal results for dynamic range and noise. Exposing normally
or to the right is the way to go, normally, unless you actually want noisy
shadowse or some other 'artistic' effect that is.

I think it would also be a very bad idea for dt to automatically compensate for
shots taken with +- exposure settings as that would screw up everyone using
exposure compensation normally e.g for backlit situations or snow. What you
can do though is just adjust exposure for one shot in the collection, return to
the light table then do copy on the modified image and paste onto all the
others. This lets you in one hit apply a whole bunch of optimisation to all
the images rather than just exposure compensation.

Rgds,
Rob.

Subject: Re: [Darktable-users] Ev compensation from exif Feature Request

2013/9/17 joel allen <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>

I posted this earlier at Flickr but seems it is more appropriate here.

I am really digging Darktable! Using my Pentax K5 I have been attempting the
expose to the left strategy. So, I use the TAv shutter Aperture priority mode
limited to iso1600 and -1EV. In doing this, most of my photos are underexposed.
It is a bit of a pain to have to manually adjust each one. I know I can create
and apply a style, but not all of my photos will be -1EV as I vary based on
conditions. Is it possible for darktable to read the EV compensation line from
the EXIF and automatically adjust exposure?

And

Regarding the exif field, it is called Exposure Bias.

Question is how to get Darktable to use it?

Any thoughts on this matter are appreciated!
Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel, usually the strategy is to expose to the right (+xEV) in order to have
more details in the shadows (but avoiding to clip the highlights)... Why do you
expose to the left?
