For Linux Workstations that will last 4-8 years w/o killing the budget, I
generally focus on:
a) Solid tower case + ultra reliable power supply (too many people go cheap
on this)
b) Asus Workstation Motherboards -- these make it slightly easier to
troubleshoot and fix stuff
c) CPU - I generally go with intel, but power efficiency + number of cores
+ size of onboard cache is much important than clock speed and worth paying
for, Linux can always make use of more cores.
d) Memory, ECC if motherboard + cpu combination allows it and if the clock
freq hit isn't too bad
