You can also have both the stable and git version.
For example on Ubuntu I have darktable installed via the PPA and I build
darktable git version using the default install prefix (/opt/darktable).
Then I dupplicate the desktop launcher :
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/darktable.desktop
/usr/share/applications/darktable-git.desktop
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/darktable-git.desktop
Change the exec line to point the darktable git version :
Exec=/opt/darktable/bin/darktable %U
And change the name (otherwise you cannot differentiate the two)
Name=Darktable-git
X-GNOME-FullName=Darktable Git
Then you have two launchers; one for darktable PPA and one for the git
compiled version. Note that you cannot launch the two simultaneously
because they lock library.db
If you compile a new git version there's no need to update the desktop file.
There should be a similar procedure for OpenSUSE !
