 As far as I know, this is only possible by abusing star ratings and the
light table's filtering. Give the two photos a uniquely high rating (eg
rate them both 5 stars if you have no other 5-star photos), restrict the
light table view to '5 stars only', and you have just those two photos
displayed.  Afterwards, reset their ratings and reset the light table
view restriction.

(Oh, you'll also want to change how many photos the light table shows
at once so it only shows two. Using the tab key to make the sidebars
disappear may also be useful.)

 I really wish there was a better way to do this, but that's what we
have in darktable today.

(It's also regrettable that light table photos always have a relatively
big border around them. I'd love a light table mode that strips that
away so the photos themselves are as large as possible.)
