IMHO the first perl that had Unicode that was stable enough *and* reliable and
had reasonable DWIM levels was 5.7.3 (and 5.8.0)

Unicode support was my main incentive to bump all production perls (also with
customer sites) to 5.8.0 (in which I also included the defined-or patches)
