I noticed this too, and I am currently running the script with:
G_DEBUG="always-malloc"
G_SLICE="always-malloc"
export G_DEBUG
export G_SLICE
Here are the results with 1000 messages (always-malloc consumes even
more memory!):

I am running 2000 and 3000 messages overnight. Once again sorry about
