Okay, this should also work for 2.2, right? Since 2.3 is still unstable,
I am still happy with 2.2 and that one works quite well.

Also my script is doing all the reading stuff itself and only for
changing things it will contact dbmail-* services. So at the
moment the script itself is only working with 2.2.

No, you should check dbmail-message.c,dbmail_message_store()

Take a look at the source for 2.3, and search for
db_mailbox_mtime_update.

But if all you really care about is message insertion, you should stick to the trigger approach:

Add an 'AFTER INSERT ON dbmail_messages' trigger that updates a datetime field on dbmail_mailboxes for the mailbox record involved.
