SOUTH AFRICA:

1 of 2 women on death row appeals sentence

Judgment of 1 of the only 2 women still on death row was reserved in the
Supreme Court of Appeal today. Sarah Lambani and Daniel Musingadi, her
co-accused, have applied to the Appeal Court in Bloemfontein to set aside
their conviction and death sentences as set out by the Pretoria High Court
in 1994.

They had been found guilty earlier of the murder and armed robbery of
Catharina Derkson at the Doornspruit farm near the then Louis Trichardt in
1993. Lambani and Musingadi's case is the last death row appeal case
stemming from the old regime that the Appeal Court will ever consider,
unless the death penalty is ever reintroduced.

Other cases have been referred to the high courts. There are more than 100
people in the country still on death row.
