SOUTH AFRICA----female death sentence overturned

Appeal Court overturns Lambani's death sentence----Other death penalty
cases have already been referred to High Courts


The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has overturned the death
sentence on Sarah Lambani, 1 of 2 women in the country who were left on
death row. Lambani's death sentence was commuted to 25 years, 10 of which
she has already served.

She had been convicted of murder and robbery in 1994, and given the death
sentence. However after serving 10 years of her sentence and her appeal
being accepted, she may only spend another 10 years in prison. Lambani's
appeal against the death sentence is the last one stemming from the
previous regime to be heard by the Appeal court. Other death penalty cases
have already been referred to high courts.

Daniel Musingadi, Lambani's co-accused, who also r sentence, has similarly
appealed against his sentence. The Appeal Court decided to commute his
death sentence to 16 years imprisonment. He has been in prison for almost
11 years. The death penalty has been abolished in South Africa.
