Death row rapist wins reprieve on appeal


A man who raped a woman double his age has had his death sentence reduced
to 7 years in jail, a court official said.

The 25-year-old Emirati man identified as A.F. was earlier sentenced to
death for raping a 50-year-old woman in her bedroom in her villa in
Sharjah.

Last week, the Sharjah Appeal Court reduced the death sentence against
A.F. to 7 years in jail.

Earlier A.F. was sentenced to death by the Sharia Court of First Instance.
A.F. appealed the sentence but the court upheld the verdict.

The case was reviewed by the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi and the
accused again denied raping the woman saying that she liked him and hence
had invited him to come to her house.

The case was sent back again to the Appeal court in Sharjah which found
out that that he did not force her. The man knew the woman lived in her
villa with her husband. One night, A.F. in a drunken state entered the
woman's villa from the kitchen window.

The court official said A.F. found the woman in her bed and raped her
several times from midnight till 5am. The woman only contacted police when
A.F left her. Police arrested the man near the woman's villa.

A.F. told the court that he did not rape the woman and that she herself
let him into her house.

INDIA:

923 criminals convicted through speedy trials in May


In Patna, 2 criminals were awarded capital punishment, while 921 others
were sentenced to various jail terms through speedy trials in the state in
May last.

Police sources said that one criminal each in Sheikhpura and Darbhanga was
awarded capital punishment, while 227 others were sentenced to rigorous
life imprisonment by the various courts in the state.

''31 criminals had been awarded 10 years imprisonment, while 663 others
were sentenced to less than 10 years of jail terms,'' sources added.

Among others, 211 were convicted in murder case, 126 in arms act, 14 for
dacoity, 13 for kidnappings, 9 for rape, and 56 in dowry cases, sources
said.
