Dear maintainers,
I am reporting some observations about desktop and l10n tasks in
testing/unstable. Can you please confirm if they are intended features
or actual issues which deserve bug reports and should be fixed ?
Some observations are reported in separate mails for clarity.
* Desktop l10n tasks for the selected desktop environment and language
(e.g. task-french-desktop and task-french-kde-desktop) are installed
only when tasksel is executed with --new-install, i.e. by pkgsel during
initial installation or by the user with --new-install.
* With most languages (e.g. french), selecting only a specific desktop
environment (e.g. KDE) without selecting "Debian desktop environment"
does not install desktop l10n packages (e.g. task-french-desktop and
task-french-kde-desktop).
* Selecting only "Debian desktop environment" without selecting a
specific desktop environment (e.g. GNOME) installs one of available
desktop environments (e.g. GNOME) but does not install the associated
l10n package (e.g. task-korean-gnome-desktop).
* "GNOME Flashback" does not install libreoffice any more.
gnome-flashback-meta replaced previous task-gnome-flashback
dependencies, including libreoffice, but it does not depend on nor
recommend libreoffice.
* Desktop l10n tasks install firefox-esr even with desktop environments
which install another web browser:
- Lomiri recommends morph-browser.
- Phosh recommends epiphany-browser.
* Desktop l10n tasks install heavy libreoffice components even with
desktop environments which do not install libreoffice:
- "Lomiri for tablet" and Phosh do not install libreoffice.
- "GNOME Flashback" does not install libreoffice (intended ?).
* Lomiri desktop recommends morph-browser but lomiri-desktop and desktop
l10n task dependencies also install firefox-esr.
* Selecting "Lomiri for tablet" also installs another desktop
environment (GNOME or Xfce) by task-desktop dependency.
* tests/default-desktop: the comparison of tasksel/desktop preseeded
value with $desktopname is flawed.
If tasksel/desktop="gnome-flashback" and $desktopname="gnome" then GNOME
is wrongly selected.
* l10n task dependencies on util-linux-locales: see separate mail.
* l10n task relationships: see separate mail.
* Minor package dependency issues and inconsistencies:
- Some l10n task packages depend on manpages and font packages (=fail if
missing) while others only recommend them (=install if available).
- Some l10n task packages depend on package "locales" (which is already
installed by base-installer) while others don't.
- task-lomiri-desktop recommends libreoffice-qt5 which does not exist
any more.
- task-thai-kde-desktop recommends libthai-dev because it enhances
libkhtml5 but libkhtml5 does not exist any more.
* Dependency issues in related packages from other source packages:
- lxde recommends www-browser (provided by many non-GUI browsers)
instead of gnome-www-browser.
- cinnamon-desktop-environment recommends libreoffice but not
libreoffice-help-en-us.
