Since you are on amd64, systemd would probably work for you but if you have a 
non-technical problem with it (systemd fobia?) then just use SysV instead.
Systemd is not mandatory on Debian even though it is a default init system.
Alternatively you can stay on outdated system forever. Systemd is really not 
_that_ bad to give up on all the work that hundreds of contributors were 
doing all these years...
