Thanks for your help! It's surprisingly grateful to discover that someone takes a look at bug reports which were submitted a year ago. The problem was indeed, as stated in that bug report, that /etc/nsswitch.conf had mode 600. Changing permissions to 644 solved the problem. I wonder why a permissions problem would result in an assertion failure. But, anyway, it's fixed now. However, the ldap-nss.c assertion failure, doesn't seem to be fixed yet.
