No. Let's try something different. Add _auth back to the lines you
altered in /etc/pam.d/rsh and /etc/pam.d/rlogin. Install "rsh-server"
(it will remove rsh-redone-server) and see if you still get an error.
Also, is there anything special about the account of the user "smart"?
If you have other non-root users on that machine, can you check if rsh
fails with the same errors?
