Clint, FYI, I managed to have the test to work without using networking at all (just Unix socket), which is a way safer than what you did.
Attached to this email is my ./debian/test_mysql.sh. I'm now working on doing the same thing with pgsql. I hope it wont be too different, because I don't know much about Postgresql. Thomas
