In the computer sense, they are synonymous.
The physical objects to which the respective analogies refer are not
synonymous. "Fichero" is: a box or a piece of furniture with drawers
where the cards can be kept in an orderly fashion. "Archivo" is: ordered
set of documents that a person/society/institution produce in the
exercise of their functions or activities. I consider "archivo" closer
to the object referred to in the analogy.
Regardless of my previous paragraph, in practice here in Spain in my
environment "archivo" is mostly used and not "fichero", except for
people who use English a lot in their work who prefer "fichero" probably
because of its greater similarity to the English "file" (these people
also tend to call libraries as "librerías", because of the similarity of
"librería" with "library" but it is a case of "false friend" because the
English "library" is the Spanish "biblioteca" and the Spanish "librería"
is the English "bookshop").

Hello,
in manpages-l10n, I've recently changed all occurrences of »fichero«
to »archivo«. It was simple using some sed commands and can be easily
reverted, if needed. The reason was that Marcos Fouces had changed it
in his first update of an existing man page translation. Don't bear
with me if this topic already has been discussed anywhere in the past.
But then I had a deeper look at the UI translations. Based on the
tarball which will be created monthly from the .po files at GNU TP
[1], I get the following count:
fichero: 6082 occurrences
archivo: 1162 occurrences
Shouldn't this be unified anyway...? Especially the UI translation of
GNU coreutils, where the current translations in manpages-l10n come
from, even shows such a different view, but with a clear lead for
»fichero«:
fichero: 604 occurrences
archivo: 6 occurrences
(Besides that, in the UI translation of diffutils, »archivo« doesn't
appear at all.)
As a non-spanish speaker, I don't care if »fichero« or »archivo« is
better. But you should decide whether the one or the other should be
used all around.
