I'm reluctant to jump so quickly to a meta dicussion but I think we underestimate the subtle effects of such discussions. In particular how they subconsciously (and conciously) affect the mindset of *non* combatants. Imagine, for example, a relative newcomer to the Project being linked to the threads in question. At the very best, it would hardly encourage them to contribute more.
