Framework caught my attention recently as I discovered that they have a
12'' inch version of their laptop line up and I was curious about the
Linux compatibility on their laptops and I came to know that they
officially support Fedora, Ubuntu and Bazzite but they also listed Mint,
Arch and NixOS as community supported ones [1].

They also announced Framework 13 Pro with Intel Panther Lake CPU lineup
[2] and it's an official Ubuntu Certified laptop -- which means it comes
with Ubuntu pre-installed and works well with the hardware out of the
box based on your configuration [3].

Is there any firmware/drivers required for Framework laptops that are
missing from Debian, or does everything work out-of-the-box after a
normal Debian install with main and non-free-firmware repos, including
all the different configurations that Framework provides?
[...]

I'm not exactly sure if framework laptops run out of the box with
Debian as I don't own one yet but Framework mostly aims to use
hardware that is readily compatible with Linux.
[...]

I'll take the example of Framework 12, their most recent laptop release.

Framework 12 has a minimum requirement for the kernel version which is Linux
6.1. Their recommended version is 6.13+ and for the best experience, they
recommend the latest Linux kernel version. [1]

I don't have the links with me but I remember reading about some person on
Reddit trying out a framework 12 with Debian 13 and they said it works well
out of the box.

I'm sure someone else might have a Framework in the Debian project who might
provide a first hand experience of using it with Debian.

Framework is also open to collaborating with other distros so they might
send us some hardware for testing if we all agree on this and reach out to
them.
For what is worth: some people documented installations of Debian on
their Framework devices:
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/FrameWork
This is great! Looks like Framework 12 works well out of the box. [1]

I recently did it for my Framework 13 AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 (not that Pro
version):

I am happy to answer questions (here in project@, but I think that it
might be off-topic for debian-project; or discuss in another mailing
list if you point me where or direct email). Or just add details on the
Wiki if anyone would like to know more and I have time.
Have you tried using it with a backported kernel to see if it fixes some of the issues you encountered?

Summary: I haven't tested the fingerprint reader, I had to add a Kernel
parameter for X11 (this was the most annoying thing to do), I had to
setup things manually for changing the brightness or volume. I didn't
need to install anything outside Debian.

As for the fingerprint reader, I'm currently working on packaging fingwit [2] [3] into Debian, which was originally made by Linux Mint team to make fingerprint reader configuration much more convenient, I'd like to hear if it could be of some use.

That said, I came across this video on Youtube [4] where Framework displayed Framework 13 Pro laptops running various Linux distributions that they worked with at their NextGen Event. They said they send their hardware to these distros to test and fix any issues they encounter and are looking for more distros to partner with [4].

Framework has also reported that their Linux version of 13 Pro is outselling its Windows counterparts. [5] [6]

This could be a great opportunity for us to work with a hardware company on officially testing Debian on their hardware.

Even if the idea of official Debian Certification is far away from us, we could still work with Framework to list Debian as an Officially Supported/Community Supported distro. [7]
