Well, mas... I must admit I got into the thread just now, so I may be a little 
repetitive.. The forst time I installed Linux in my life was when I put Debian 
in my PC, fully from scratch, using ONLY FTP, so I can tell you that it is 
indeed not only possible but easy to do...

All I did was to grab the (6?) disk images from the /dists/stable/disks-i386/ 
dir in my local Debian mirror then followed the on-screen instructions.. The 6 
disks create the basic system, then you run (I mean, HE runs) dselect to allow 
you to select the packages you may be interested in and then... well, then you 
must be REALLY patient, as your PC will begin to download something like 
100-300Mb of data, then install it... But I assure you: it works, and is a 
piece of cake!
