After (far too) much mucking about in the various NIS config files, I decided to try upgrading from stable to testing despite an earlier post's mention of recent problems with the version in testing. And it worked. I have no idea what was causing it to fail, but it works now... Thanks again to all who offered suggestions. They may not have contained the solution to my troubles, but now I know a good deal more about configuring NIS. I expect I'll do a better job of setting up the domain as a result. -- That's not gibberish...
