Install the package "msttcorefonts"; you need to include "contrib" in
your /etc/apt/sources.list to see this package.

You probably won't need xfstt; just check with

fc-list | grep "Times New Roman"

if the font is known after you install the package.

Also, "ttf-bitstream-vera" or "ttf-dejavu" offer quite readable fonts.
