I recommend to help aptitude by setting the attribute markauto to that installed packages which are dependencies of main packages. E.g., the packages of g77-3.3, gcc-3.3, cpp-3.3, since they are dependencies of the packages g77 and gcc, I think. Also remove the package r-mathlib. After the update you could install r-recommended. And also try to remove any un-needed packages and older obsolete packages (they are shown in the aptitude gui).
