If there might be any problem with readability on source disc sectors, then 'ddrescue' is far superior to plain old 'dd'. Be aware that there is more than one version of ddrescue, and I've seen at least one version which was less than reliable. From personal experience the version packaged by Debian seems to be a good version. -- 73, Ged.
