I don't know what you're trying to do, but ERE [0-7]{1,2} matches one-
or two-digit *octal* numbers (e.g. 5, 07, 72, 77) but not numbers that
contains the digits 8 or 9.
Do you have a book whose verses are enumerated in octal?
