Thunderbird supports NNTP and likely Claws as well. Gnus (Emacs) should be a bit more than just text UI.
I am in doubts what you mean by "browser plugin", but Chromium blocks nntp: URI scheme. Perhaps it was done to prevent DDoS attacks on news servers using malicious sites.
