The key name for the character I want is quotedbl. So the error shows as
follows:-
chris$ xte 'key quotedbl'
2chris$ 2
You can use the actual character for letter and digit keys, e.g.:-
chris$ xte 'key a'
achris$ a
... and I've found a way to get ", as follows:-
chris$ xte 'keydown Shift_L';xte 'key 2';xte 'keyup Shift_L';
"chris$ "
