Delphi 5 or 6 are fine for Win32: if you need to use DotNet or advanced Web
programming, you have to go to Delphi 8 upwards.
Here in Italy NOBODY is proposing new programs in Delphi: instead C#, VB,
Java, Eclipse etc; I couldn't honestly recommend Delphi myself, even though
it is the tool I prefer to use;
Legacy Delphi programs are being moved towards MS VisualStudio or to
multiplatform solutions: due to the job recession here, many companies are
taking on very junior programmers who do not know DOS, turbo pascal etc.
some of the IT job agencies don't even know what Delphi is: one thought it
was an accounting package!
Borland tools cannot compete with MS alternatives for Windows or with Open
Source alternatives for Windows or other OS's;
Java has the advantage that it is multiplatform, and databases such as
Oracle can use it as its internal language, so that the programmer using
Java for frontends can use it also for stored procedures etc on the db
server: Delphi does only the frontend on Windows!
If you are happy with Delphi 5, I would stay there: if you want to move to
DotNet or Web, learn another language: Java, C# (I would avoid VB);
If you want to do compact Win32 programming, Delphi is fine;
If you need to port a Delphi program to DotNet or Intranet, I think it is
time to revise the program and convert it to another language, if it is to
have a long term future;
