None taken - I'm grateful for the benefit of all advice, suggestions and 
comments.  There are 430+ cells (a grid of 14 x 31) and the CPU is a P4 2.8GHz 
(I mistakenly said a P3 in one of my mails).  I think with "a flash" I was 
comparing it to the poor times of my own earlier efforts.  In fact, 
subsequently those times have increased to around a quarter of a second as I've 
made the test data more complex and added a fourth colour to block out all 
Sundays within the month.

   No offense but unless you have hundreds and hundreds of cells (or are using 
an Intel 386 CPU), 0.14 secs is pretty slow.. certainly not "a flash". That's 
seeable by the human eye.
