Dave None taken - I'm grateful for the benefit of all advice, suggestions and comments. There are 430+ cells (a grid of 14 x 31) and the CPU is a P4 2.8GHz (I mistakenly said a P3 in one of my mails). I think with "a flash" I was comparing it to the poor times of my own earlier efforts. In fact, subsequently those times have increased to around a quarter of a second as I've made the test data more complex and added a fourth colour to block out all Sundays within the month.
