You seem to have a partial answer there.  

I would:

a) If the problem is in the field then I would try writing a quick &
dirty a stress test program that sends random print jobs to a test
machine - if you can replicate it in house it is always easier.

b) Try taking NT out of the equation - any reason you can't just throw
on '95 for a test?

c) Try taking the driver out - ie try using a generic text only print
driver or talk to Axiohm (who ever they are) and see if they have known
problems or get an older printer driver off them.
