Hello Glenn
I was in exactly your position 2 years ago. Here is my penny's worth.
I got the Delphi in 21 Days book (it came free with D3 at the time) and it
was a good starting point, but you would be superhuman do take it in in 21
days.
Next I went to a 2 day Borland course in Auckland. With my lack of
programming knowledge (let alone OO) it came frighteningly close to being a
complete waste of money for me. This was no fault of the course - it's just
that you NEEDED a greater level of experience than I had.
I have found two publications to be particularly useful:
A CD of Delphi Informant back numbers. I found these more useful than
current issues of the mag as they covered things at a more basic level.
They recently seem to have overlooked the fact that there are still learners
out there - Delphis been going for 5 years therefore all of our readers have
been using it for 5 years!
Marco Cantu's Mastering Delphi. This is excellent. I have found the level
of this book MUCH more useful than that of Teixera and Pachero's Delphi
Developer's Guide (which I also have).
Both of these books (and many others) should be available through your local
library (get in before the polytechs and uni's start back) for you to have a
look and and assess which are best for your level.
Without doubt the best teaching that I got was, once a week, sitting with a
Delphi programmer/mentor as he implemented parts of a system that I had
designed; continuing with the coding myself during the week and seeing his
solutions to problems that I had encountered during the week
Finally, you've already found a very knowledgable and patient group of
people willing to pass on their experience, though the Delphi Users Group.
This group has helped me enormously.
Good luck!
Mark
