I learned about using virtual machines from here an excellent presentation by Lachlan Gemmell to ADUG. This is Lachlan's

Lachlan talks about VMWare; In the end I downloaded and installed VirtualBox from Sun Microsystems. It is free and very
easy to install. Lots of forums to help as well.
