AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY
ACTIONS TO STOP THE EXECUTION OF A U.S.
POLITICAL PRISONER
A courageous African-American journalist is facing execution on false
charges. The police and courts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, fabricated
murder charges against Mumia Abu-Jamal because he exposed the racism,
brutality and corruption of the Philadelphia police department. For 17
years, Mumia, whose eloquent radio condemnations of injustice have earned
him the title "Voice of the Voiceless", has been on death row awaiting
execution.
Late last year, in spite of overwhelming evidence of his innocence, the
Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected his appeal for a new trial. Any day
now, Pennsylvania Gov. Thomas Ridge, a right -wing Republican, may sign a
warrant for Mumia's execution. Mumia's case has become a symbol of the
widespread human- rights violations that, as Amnesty International now
documents, plague the entire U.S. judicial system. It vividly illustrates
the hypocrisy of the U.S. government when it lectures people in other lands
about "human rights" and "democracy".
The U.S. now has the largest prison population in the world and the largest
number of people awaiting execution. Because of the racist nature of the
police and courts and the entire U.S. political and economic system, most
of those in prison are people of color. A majority of the U.S. prison
population is Black, Latin or American Indian. In some metropolitan areas
more than one-third of all young Black males are in the judicial system;
many more than are in college. The U.S. state imprisons Black people at a
higher rate than did South Africa under apartheid.
The Feb. 4th New York police murder of Amadou Diallo, a 22-year-old
immigrant from Guinea who was shot 41 times although he had no weapon and
had no charges against him, is but another example of the daily police
terror against Black communities that Mumia was targeted for exposing and
speaking out against. From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Fred Hampton, too
many Black activists and fighters for justice in the United States have
been murdered by the forces of racism and repression. We must not allow
Mumia Abu-Jamal's name to be added to that list. THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!
ON SATURDAY, APRIL 24, Mumia's birthday, there will be massive
demonstrations in the U.S.--in Philadelphia and in San Francisco--to demand
a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal and to demand the basic right that
suppressed information be heard. On that day, musicians and other artists,
international delegates and political and religious leaders will join
together with students and other youth, community activists, trade
unionists and people's organizations in a powerful mobilization to demand a
new trial for Mumia.
Even from his prison cell, Mumia Abu-Jamal has spoken out against injustice
and the abuse of power by the United States government not only in the
United States but all over the world. In the long and illustrious tradition
of international solidarity that helped win freedom for the Scottsboro
brothers and Nelson Mandela, we appeal to people all over the world who
believe in justice and freedom to join the April 24 Million for Mumia
mobilization. We urge that on that day protests be organized at United
States embassies and consulates in cities all over the world. We also urge
trade unions, journalists' groups, political parties and other mass
organizations to pass resolutions and add their names to the voices calling
for justice for Mumia. And, we also urge, in the tradition of the struggle
to free Nelson Mandela, that the streets outside U.S. embassies be renamed
in honor of United States political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Un valeroso periodista Afro-Americano espera ejecucion por cargos
falsos. La policia y cortes en Filadelfia, Pennsylvania fabricaron
cargos de haber matado a un policia contra Mumia Abu-Jamal. Pero
su
unico crimen era exponer el racismo y la corrupcion y brutalidad de la
policia en Filadelfia. Por sus elocuentes expresiones radiales contra la
injusticia, se conoce a Mumia como "la Voz de los que no tienen Voz." Pero
por 16 anos, el espera la muerte en una carcel de Pennsylvania. El ano
pasado, a pesar de clara evidencia de su inocencia, la Corte Suprema de
Pennsylvania rechazo su peticion de un nuevo juicio. El derechista
gobernador de Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge, podria firmar otra orden de
ejecucion en cualquier momento.
El caso de Mumia Abu-Jamal ha llegado a ser un simbolo de las
amplias
violaciones de derechos humanos que infestan al entero sistema
judicial en
los Estados Unidos. Ilustra vivamente la hipocresia del gobierno de
EEUU
cuando regana a otros paises sobre "democracia" y "derechos
humanos." Los
Estados Unidos ya tienen el numero de presos mas alto en el
mundo. Tienen
el numero mas alto de personas esperando ejecucion. Por la
naturaleza
racista de la policia y las cortes en los EE.UU, la mayoria de los
encarcelados son Afro-Americanos, Latinos o indigenas. En algunas
areas
urbanas, mas de un tercio de los jovenes muchachos Afro-
Americanos se
encuentran atrapados en el sistema judicial. Los Estados Unidos
encarcela
la poblacion negra a un nivel mas alto que el regimen surafricano en los
dias oscuros de apartheid.
Desde el Dr. Martin Luther King hasta Fred Hampton de las Panteras
Negras, demasiados activistas y luchadores por la justicia en los
Estados Unidos han sido acallados y asesinados a manos de las
fuerzas del
racismo y la represion. No debemos permitir que el nombre de Mumia
Abu-Jamal sea anadido a esta lista ignomia. Ha llegado la hora para
actuar.
El sabado 24 de abril es el cumpleanos de Mumia. Bajo la bandera
de
"Milliones para Mumia," habran manifestaciones masivas en
Filadelfia y en
San Francisco, Estados Unidos, reclamando un juicio nuevo para
Mumia
Abu-Jamal y para el derecho basico de presentar evidencia
suprimida. En
este dia, artistas, delegados internacionales, y lideres politicos y
religiosos van a unirse a estudiantes y jovenes, activistas
comunitarios,
sindicalistas y otras organizaciones populares en una movilizacion
poderosa demandando un juicio nuevo para Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Aun desde su celda, Mumia Abu-Jamal continua declamando contra
la
injusticia y los abusos de poder del gobierno de los Estados Unidos,
dentro del pais e internacionalmente.
En la larga tradicion de solidaridad internacional, que gano la
libertad de los hermanos de Scottsboro en los anos 30 y de Nelson
Mandela en nuestro propio tiempo, llamamos a todos en el mundo
que
desean justicia y libertad, para que se unan a la movilizacion
"Milliones para Mumia" el 24 de abril. Estamos pidiendo
manifestaciones y piquetes de solidaridad frente a embajadas y
consulados de EEUU en toda ciudad donde se encuentren.
Rogamos que
sindicalistas, periodistas, partidos politicos y organizaciones
populares mander denuncias y unan sus voces a los que piden
justicia
para Mumia. Tambien preguntamos, en el espiritu de la lucha para
librerar a Nelson Mandela, que calles frente a embajadas
estadounidenses se nombren en honor del preso politico
norteamericano

Appel a sauver la vie
d'un prisonnier politique aux Etats-Unis
par des actes de solidarite internationale
Un journaliste courageux se trouve dans les couloirs de la mort dans
l'attente de son execution. Mumia Abu-Jamal a ete emprisonne par la
police et les tribunaux de Philadelphie -- les plus notoires aux
Etats-Unis en matiere de brutalite et de corruption -- apres un proces
truque. En journaliste et en militant politique, Mumia a donne une voix
aux sans-voix et il a expose la brutalite policiere et leur oppression
raciste a Philadelphie.
En octobre dernier, la Cour supreme de l'Etat de Pennsylvanie a
rejete le
recours en appel de Mumia pour un nouveau jugement en depit de
beaucoup de
temoignages de son innocence. Et le gouverneur Thomas Ridge a
declare
qu'il signera le mandat de sa mise a mort.
L'affaire Mumia a obtenu un large soutien de la part d'activistes pour
droits humains a travers le monde. Mumia Abu-Jamal reste un symbole d'une
politique sociale d'etat qui a echoue -- il y a 2 millions de detenus aux
Etats-Unis dont presque 4 mille sont dans les couloirs de la mort --
d'apres Amnesty Internationale. Cette politique manifeste l'hypocrisie des
Etats-Unis qui veulent devenir l'arbitre de la << democratie >> et de <<
droits humains >> a travers le monde.
Les forces du racisme et de la repression aux Etats-Unis ont tue
beaucoup de militants noirs de Dr. Martin Luther King a Fred
Hampton. Nous
disons : cela n'arrivera pas pour Mumia. On doit s'engager.
Le samedi 24 avril -- date d'anniversaire de Mumia -- deux grandes
manifestations populaires a Philadelphie et a San Francisco
reclameront un nouveau proces pour Mumia. Des vedettes du Hip
hop et
du Rap, des delegues internationaux, d'eminentes personnalites et
leaders religieux se joindront a des dizaines de milliers d'etudiants et
de jeunes pour Mumia, des militants communautaires, des organisations
syndicaux et populaires afin de mettre sur pieds une puissante
mobilisation.
Dans l'habitude glorieuse de solidarite internationale, qui a aide a
gagner la liberation des freres Scottsboro, Nelson Mandela, Angela
Davis, et plus, nous faisons un appel a toutes les gens qui
soutienent la
justice et la liberte : Joignez la mobilisation "Millions pour Mumia" le
24 avril.
Nous demandons trois actes concrets :
manifestations le 24 avril en face des ambassades et consulats
americains a travers le monde ; declarations et resolutions de
syndicats, d'unions de journalistes, de partis politiques et

nouvelle appellation, dans la tradition de la lutte pour faire soutenir
Nelson Mandela, a la gloire de Mumia et d'autres prisonniers politiques
americains pour re-nommer les rues et les places publiques aboutissant aux
