I compiled it from a git pull.  

With jack enabled  ( " ./configure --enable-jack " )

Could that be the culprit?  I don't have jack running when using this denemo 
setup.  

I don't see anything in the explicit user setting controls that mentions jack 
(if jack controls exists I am missing them)

No. It some more generalized default device was selected. 

However, when I selected my keyboard, that preference started persisting across 
close/open .  It was added to the denemorc file

Yes... I see my recently selected input device in that xml node.
